However, it is now known by bargain hunters around the world for a day where retailers offer big discounts off products. Black Friday has grown into one the busiest shopping period of the year with deals spreading out over weeks in November. But how did Black Friday turn into a global phenomenon?
While there is no official record of the beginning of Black Friday, the term grew in popularity in the US during the 1980s. After Thanksgiving, customers would start shopping for Christmas presents and retailers would see a big increase in sales. Stores would go from operating at a loss to a profit meaning their Profit and Loss sheets with go from red to black, hence the term was coined. Retailers would typically avoid Christmas promotions until after Thanksgiving thus the day immediately after became a popular day for heavy discounts.
Cyber Monday was born with the development of eCommerce websites. Traditionally Black Friday was for brick-and-mortar stores with Cyber Monday being a day for online deals the following Monday. In modern day, the sales period stretches over the entire weekend and beyond with most retailers offering discounts online and in stores.
